Most hard drive camcorders record files as .mod. The main codec used is Mpeg-2 with Ac3 audio.

To edit these files in Premiere there are a few simple steps to go through:

Make sure ‘additional codecs not included in the trial version of Premiere’ are installed. I kept getting an error, but a reinstall fixed the problem.

Bestow Ac3 capabilities unto Premiere. Done by copying the file ad2ac3dec.dll (also found in Encore CS3’s root directory) to Premiere’s root directory.

Batch rename the .mod files to .m2v or .mpg. This can be done in the command prompt, using the change directory (cd) and rename (rename *.old *.new) commands.

Create a new project in Premiere, using the DV - NTSC - Widescreen 48kHz preset.

Import the .m2v/.mpg files, then interpret the footage, using ‘frame rate from file’ and conforming the pixel aspect ratio to D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2).

By now Premiere should allow you to edit the files. Many thanks to Turkov for sharing the ‘interpret footage’ tip. You can click through to his blog post on the same issue for a more detailed walkthrough with great screenshots. Of course, it is always best to uncompress the footage but that’s not always an option (I am now accepting donations for a bigger external HD :P).

This is a guest post from JMag, one of my associates. He covers a workaround to an issue we have all come across or will come across in our short lifetime(s). We happened to have an exam in the same room and five minutes in, my bleeding nose inspired him. We also understand exam season is over, so feel free to bookmark this page, buy me a beer, and return when you feel like cheating!

Have you ever neglected studying for an exam, and then realized the night before, “Oh no, I have no time to study all of this material, I could cheat…but then I would get caught and get 0% instead of 10%”…if so, I have the solution for you, young pilot. Here it is, the technique previously spoken of only in an underground cult-like society…the sure-fire way to not get caught cheating on an exam!

First, you must have pages of important information related to the exam in a hidden place when you get to the exam. You can either rip pages out of your textbook, steal other students’ notes, or you could make your own study notes. The ripping-pages-out-of-the-textbook method is your best bet…it’s got everything you need, in pretty decent detail. Nonetheless, store your papers in your pocket, shoe, under your shirt, or some other hidden place.

Now, you’re in the exam room. The first ten questions could be answered by headless babies. But the next few throw you into a state of shock. Normally, a cheater would pull out their notes, and somehow sneak-a-peek at them…this is a boner move! Statistics show that 56 out of every 52 students who attempt this absurd cheating-technique get caught!

You could ask to go to the washroom, however it is still pretty early in the exam, and this would ignite some suspicion in the teacher whom is supervising the exam.

Here’s where the technique comes in. This step is perhaps the easiest, and will be sure to generate lots of lulz from your classmates. Jump up out of your seat, and in a controlled manner, shout “nosebleed”, and cover your nose as if some erythrocytes and leukocytes are actually being secreted from your nostrils. The teacher will be all sympathetic (especially if you’re foreign, like me), and won’t question your actions. Leave the classroom promptly; head to the washroom.

Whilst your classmates are searching aimlessly for the answers in their heads, you are in the bathroom, reading your cheat sheets (you may want to go into a dump-stall while doing this, because some creepy teachers use the student washrooms). Determine the answer to your questions(s), and rush back to the classroom, sporting a sad face as if you are upset that you lost exam time due to your nose bleed. This will make the supervising teacher feel sorry for you (again, especially if you‘re foreign, like me), and he or she may give you some extra time! Bonus!

To conclude, be sure to celebrate the completion of each question with a “Yes!” out loud. This is sure to get some lulz from your classmates.

Have you ever bought chips and then realized you were riding your bike? Ever wanted to eat those chips while riding your bike? Yes, the unthinkable is now possible. I may not be the first to have thought of this, but I hope to spread my knowledge and further humanity in posting this.

I’ve had a bit of experience with situations like these in the past. The trick behind pulling this off correctly is all in hand positioning. You can hold your bag of chips like you normally would, but resting the bottom edge of your hand on the bike’s handlebar. Your non-bag-holding hand will be on the other handlebar as if you were riding a bike normally.

Now comes the difficult part: successfully eating a chip. Make sure there aren’t any big bumps coming up, or you could faceplant or fall. If there are no bumps, reach into the bag of chips with your other hand, make sure to keep the ride smooth and steady. Pick a chip and eat it. At any time during the picking process be ready to drop any chips and return your hand to the handlebar (to avoid bumps/falling down).

Use these tips at your own peril. You may risk a few chips/injuries while learning. Once learned, however, this is a useful life skill that will add extra depth to your bike rides.

Tutorial videos on the same subject are coming soon (i.e. next few months).

These are somethings which I know work, garnered from personal experience, plus nothing here is very hard to put together. Here are a few of these concepts, or ideas, which could be helpful to some people:

Don’t be rude to people (if you are chances are people will not like you as much)

Promise something outlandish (eg. chocolate milk out of water fountains) and then work hard to get it done

LAN parties (not very hard to put together if your school has a computer lab, try Halo or Quake 3)

Good, short speech (depending on how seriously other people take their campaign, make it really weird/funny)

Don’t get posters approved (if your school has that rule) and simply put up a large amount throughout the school on ceilings, walls, and other hard to reach places. Because you didn’t get them approved, the administration will have to take them down for you, for free. The timing of this must be perfect, try the night before the speech or election.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to follow any of these ideas, always add your own, no matter how bad you think they are. Even if you lose, who gives?
